Happy Saturday, my friends! If you’ve been following A House With Books for a while, especially on Insta, you know we make scones around here on Saturday morning – specifically chocolate chip scones!
My mom made these for my friends and me the entire time I was growing up and they’ve become pretty legendary (I still have people from my childhood texting me for the recipe all these years later so they can make them for their kids). I love that – I love that my mom made a memory in our hearts that’s being passed down to a younger generation. Making Cha Cha’s scones is my kids’ absolute favorite thing to do on Saturday morning (or any morning for that matter, lol).
It’s a very simple recipe and about as healthy as you can get with a scone recipe. You definitely don’t have to be a skilled baker to make them – I mean come on, I make them! And both of my kids have been helping since they were 2. The funniest thing about the recipe is it’s an old Weight Watchers recipe that Princess Fergie promoted in the 90’s – it kind of came full circle since I do WW now. We’ve modified it a bit over the years, but it’s basically the same!
Enjoy, lovelies! I hope these become a tradition in your home as well.
Chocolate Chip Scones
Ingredients
1 3/4 cup flour
1/3 cup sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
5 tbsp cold butter
1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
3/4 cup orange juice
Directions
Whisk flour, sugar, baking powder and salt until combined. Cut in cold butter until it’s evenly distributed, it won’t combine fully. Stir in orange juice and chocolate chips. Form batter with hands until the consistency of biscuit dough. Form into a 1/2 inch thick circle and place on floured parchment paper. With a biscuit cutter, cut out scones (we usually use a scalloped biscuit cutter or larger seasonal ones). Place on baking sheet with a silicone mat. Bake at 400 deg. for approx. 15 minutes, until golden brown on the edges and cooked through.
These scones are delicious hot out of the oven or as a quick leftover breakfast. You can eat them plain or topped with butter. Enjoy!
