I’m so, so glad I stuck with this book! About 50 pages in I was about to sell it back to the Half Price Books. It wasn’t because it was bad, quite the opposite actually – it was too good… too real, a little too sad to read to before bed which is when I normally find the time.
I kept going though and thank goodness I did because I ended up adoring Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. It has all the elements you seek in a favorite book – smart writing, mystery, deep relationships and the best part, an introduction to an unfamiliar, fascinating world.
The novel starts by introducing us to Kya, one of the most interesting characters I’ve ever read, a young girl living in the deep marsh of North Carolina who is slowly being abandoned by her entire family. It’s a coming of age story that ends up morphing into a murder mystery and a heart wrenching love story…all while Owens completely entrances the reader with reach out and touch it imagery. Her descriptions of the North Carolina coast are truly magical – it will make you want to book a trip to see it in person immediately.
All in all, I was much to quick to judge this wonderful novel. I loved it and I’m so sad that it’s over…it’s a good thing I never sell a favorite’s shelf book back;)
I hope you guys enjoy Where the Crawdads Sing! Make sure to tag me on Instagram with a picture of the book and let me know what you think! Happy Reading, Lovelies!
